Bare Naked Ladies have a kids cd called Snack Time. The songs are geared towards kids but aren't annoying like most children's music. My kids also like songs by The Imagination Movers (it's a Disney show) you can download or buy their cds and I find it much better than most kids stuff and I listen to a lot of kids music since I teach kindergarten and have two kids under the age of 5!

I'm a fan of the Rock and Roll Coochicoo Revue. Basically, a lot of Boston musicians got together and decided to record a children's CD that did exactly what you said -- was actually listenable and wouldn't drive parents insane. Personally, I think it's awesome, and I'm long past being 3 to 6 years old.

My favorite songs are probably the ones by Kay Hanley, Tanya Donelly and Heavy Stud.

I started early getting my kids- now 3 1/2 (twins) used to MY music. They just moved from country/bluegrass to VanHalen. It has warmed my heart since they are one of my favorite bands from my teenage years. Other favorites for them are Def Leppard and AC/DC.
Anything they can jam to with their little guitars. I do have to say that I miss the country, but have found a good "oldies" station on the radio.
Try it, your kids may like the '80s stuff. Most of the lyrics are fine and the beat is still irresitible and infectious.

I like the Kidz Bop CDs. I never listened to any of them until McDonald's gave them away with their Happy Meals. All of the songs are contemporary, but sung by children so kids feel like they're CD is kind of a grown up CD. My daughter also always liked those CDs with all of the kid's classics like "The Wheels on the Bus" and John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, but admittedly, those tend to drive an adult crazy after a while.

Classical music or any contemporary music that is wordless, and uses only music. Yanni has wonderful videos of his concerts he has composed and conducted, and it's not classical at all. However, some of his songs do have lyrics, so, I just delete those (he hires singers for those performances). Children get excited to see his concerts though. Another choice is a group who has been compiling such music as I am speaking about is called NARADA for more than a decade (I have listed websites below for each). My favorite cd of theirs is called: Narada Decade. They have many cds using orchestras, piano, guitar and other kinds of instrumentals, and styles of music, even flamenco music.
Music that has no lyrics are in my opinion the best for children. There are no words to impress or demand the child into becoming something he/she would or wouldn't become without it. It's suitable for ALL ages as well. :D All of my children have listened to these kinds of CDs and have watched such videos. Good luck with finding something!

I've heard the best type would be jazz. The beats in the background and front make kids stop and listen as they try to figure it out. It also help growth, I've heard.
But I guess classical songs would also work, since they are mostly in the background. To keep the kids' interest in them, try playing famous works, like from Mozart.
I clearly remember the music I listened to when I was young, and I have a strong suspicion that that's why I listen to the music I do today. If you're wondering, I listened to techno, and I loved it! I guess you can try that as well if you're willing.
