I showed them a poster-chart of the four major food groups, and took them shopping, and told them they could have whatever they wanted as long as they could make each meal a combination of 25% from each one, and then I'd read the ingredient labels on the back and would keep a running tally on a pad of paper that they could check to see how things were adding up, and it was interesting to watch their own heads grind around the problem once they understood the rules.

But, you know... they were kids, so they're very tolerant of strange taste combinations, and on average, after about 10 days, they usually tended to forget about it and would just want to sit down and eat a plate of the same food we were having.

As a mother of 3.Honestly you need to start as soon as they are born.

I believe breastfeeding is the first step in raising a healthy child. They tend to make better decisions later on with food choices.
My oldest daughter refused to BF and now HATES fruits and veggies. My middle girl BF till 1 yr old and ONLY likes fruits and veggies. My baby so far in BF for 6 months and prefers her veggies to cereal.

I'm a mean mom. That's all my daughter gets most of the time is healthy food. Except for special occasions, like Halloween where she is allowed a couple pieces of candy. I usually end up giving the rest away or dumping it because she gets way too much to be able to eat it all anyway.

We have no snacks except for veggies and fruit. She likes veggies with Ranch or cheese sauce. She loves cheese and cheese sticks. I also buy fruit cups. We don't drink soda so when she is allowed to have some, like at a party or something, she doesn't want it and prefers juice, water or milk. It's too strong for her since she isn't used to it.

It is important to start when they're young with foods that are good for them. But believe me, they'll eat what you give them if that's all there is.

There are some great ideas at the link below.

Also mix healthy foods with what they like in shakes, baked and cooked recipes.

Encourage them.
Make fun of non-healthy food (people subconsciously dislike anything other people make fun of).
Encourage them to do a sport activity, even if it just walking.
Reward your children for eating a healthy food but with food.
Involve kids in the process of cooking.
Try different food receipts from other cultures like Japanese food, Moroccan food. They are not a 100% healthy but they are healthier and delicious.
Don't eat non-healthy food and encourage them to eat healthy food just because they are children.

I make sure to follow healthy eating habits myself and let my children see me do so. It's also good to explain why foods are healthy and what each one does. I like to try to make meal time as fun as possible and treat problems eating healthy similar to problems with picky eating.

I have the mahalo page How to Deal with Picky Eaters which also includes a few articles I've written such as dealing with picky eaters, and how to make meal time fun and educational.
