Answered Conundrum Next Conundrum
Should preteens have their own cell phones already?
At my 10 year old's middle school kids as young as 10 and 11 own their own cell phones and sit outside the school actively texting and talking to friends. Some have even told my son their younger siblings own their own phone as well. At what age should kids have their own phone?

Reason #1
Not only is texting a negative trend that we shouldn't allow our children to participate in, (after all we are their parents) it takes away from their quality of life. Have you ever seen a teenager texting away? They seen nothing around them but that phone, they just sit and text. It's as addictive as online games, if not moreso.
Reason #2
The jury is still out on whether or not cell phones are safe. My opinion is they are not safe and should be used sparingly. Within the next ten years the safety of cell phone use will come to light.
I have a cell phone but I never put it to my five year old daughter's head. When I am home, I turn it off. I still have land line phones, with a cord, for home use.
From mercola.com ----The Vienna
Medical Association is demanding the removal of zero tariffs and the
banning of mobile phone advertising targeting children and adolescents.
Says Erik Huber, environment advisor for the association: “Children
under the age of 16 should never use a mobile phone.”
Dr. Mercola.com ----"The best way to
protect yourself would be to simply not use a cell phone and revert
back to a corded phone. At the very least I would urge you to not let your kids use them
or severely limit their use. Their developing nervous systems and
thinner skulls are simply too vulnerable to cell phone damage."
I do believe kids who are old enough to go out with other kids to movies or a restaurant, need a phone in case of emergencies. Texting is not necessary. We should talk to our children and explain to them why texting is not so great. Parents need to be parents and say no sometimes. Explain to them why they don't need a cell phone 'attached' to their hand.
I cringe everytime I see a teenager, especially a girl, pull a cell phone out of her pocket or anyone for that matter.

I think 10 or 11 is okay. However, I've found that there's just something about text messaging that is unhealthy. Kids tend to spend large amounts of time on it talking about absolutely nothing. It's like instant messaging, but 24 hours a day.
I would recommend getting your kids a Blackberry (not a cell phone), but don't get a text messaging plan. Tell them to sync an e-mail account up to the phone instead. I don't know why, but e-mail breeds more legitimate behavior.
Of course, you'll obviously have to pitch them on this idea. Tell them that they're getting older, and they don't need a "childish" device with childish features; you want them to have a "cool" phone just like you have.

I like the cell phones for kids that are pre-programmed to only call home, 911, grandma, school, etc. I don't think texting is ever necessary, and photo phones are a definite NO. Kids are starting to get into a lot of trouble over "sexting" (sending provocative photos and other content) and are actually being found guilty of distributing child porn (they are legally the victim, since they are in the photo, and also the sex offender!). Phones are great for emergencies, but kids don't need to be chatting with their friends on the phone all day.

When a kid already needs a cell phone, such as when he constantly don’t have the supervision of his parents or guardians whenever his outside, then giving him a cell phone will be helpful. However, it is important for parents to teach the younger ones on how to use their cell phone responsibly. More so, they should also carefully choose the kind of cell phone that is appropriate to their age.
