As a single mom of three, two who are boys I have had the sex talk with them. I suggest begin talking with them in age appropriate terms when they are quite young. My 15-year-old daughter got pregnant and my sons who were 10 and 12 asked questions.

The 12 yr old asked if ‘rubbers’ would have stopped the baby from coming. I remember that day so well, but it was my opening to say yes, and rubbers are condoms and prevent many things. The door way was opened so I explained about venereal diseases and pregnancy. The ten year old was grossed out, about the topic but it did give him a basis for it.

Since that day 8 years ago, my boys ask me questions of a sexual nature because they feel comfortable in doing so. My suggestion is, look for an opening and suggest things to them in a way they can understand. Do not try to give them tons of information all at once.
