Will Japan's child custody laws in divorce proceedings be affected by foreign pressure?
It seems that custody is often given to only the mother, with no visitation rights for fathers at all. Several countries want Japan to adopt the Hague Convention on International Child Abduction, in order to protect the rights of international fathers. Currently, an American father is in Jail for trying to secure visitation with his children who have a Japanese mother. What do you think will happen?

Japan is not known to change their laws according to international pressure, but they recently had a "regime change" (for the first time since shortly after WWII), so there may be more of a chance. Also, interracial marriage was not popular with the government in the past, but due to the declining birthrate, the acceptance of foreigners in Japan is improving slightly, and along with it may come revisions to the related laws.

What a nightmare that must be for both Japanese and international fathers of Japanese children.
I suspect that Japan will not change the law. I think the father who is currently being detained will be escorted to his departing plane and asked not to return. I think that the government and citizens of Japan feel that they are protecting their children, their heritage, especially in the case of international fathers seeking visitation. I don't agree with them, but it's not my culture.
Unfortunately, this may be a case of ignorance of the law being no excuse. If nothing else, this case will raise awareness.
Sad.
