Would you give a child a pricey "smart phone" for Christmas? Why or Why not?

There are obviously certain arguments out there against giving a child a smart phone, but I'm surprised this is one of them. What kind of neighborhood do you have to live in for this to be a concern? What about the $100 hat they are wearing? What about the $300 jacket?
When Nike Air Jordan shoes came out there were also thefts reported (yes, off of people's feet). However, lots of people bought them and the vast majority of those people had no issues.

Yep, if someone wants to steal, there are all sorts of choices. There are precautions a person can take without getting too awfully paranoid about it.
