Answered Conundrum Next Conundrum
You have just read 4 goodnight stories to your 4-year old, but he requests more. Do you keep reading? Where do you draw the line?
You want to keep reading, because he loves books and you want to promote his reading skills. But how many books a night are adequate, so that the bedtime routine does not get needlessly stretched out?

I've been there when my children were not reading yet! You need to get him to participate in picking just "two" books each night. Four is a lot and he will keep adding to that number before you know it. I love books and so do my children so it was always hard to choose. However, make it his responsibility to pick the two books before bed. If he picks three or four, ask him which ones he wants to "reserve" for the next night.
Introduce him to the library and then make a little one at home. He can get a card (you can make one) to use at his home library...check out two books and then return them that night and he will get his card back from you to take out two more on the next night.
Perhaps on a weekend night he can pick three books. This way he will look forward to bonus story night!!
Enjoy........reading is wonderful!

That all depends on your parenting. I feel that it is always best to stick with what you originally say and not back down. If you say you are only going to read a certain amount of books you dont want to keep reading more or else your child will think they can control you and are the boss. What would be best is if you could get your child in a habit of maybe just 1 or 2 stories every night and keep it that way. It may be a little hard at first since they may not be used to your new schedule but after a while and not backing down you should be fine. I agree with you that reading/listening is a good thing and that should be promoted but you dont want to spoil your child. Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. Anyway i hope this advice helps you.

Read. Read. Read. The more the better. When my kids were infants, my wife met a reading expert who said to read to the kids - all the way through high school. Since then, she reads every night to my kids - as much as she can (often an hour). They still love the stories - even though my oldest is in high school. Of course, the stories are now very mature in nature - and always filled with humor, accents, and fun.
That said, we have strict cut-off times when the stories stop. That time has inched up as they age. Yet, the key is the kids see this as a commitment to them, an act of love and selflessness. It is the most important part of my kids' day - for sure.

Tell your son you will read him 2 and only two stories every night because you both need your rest for the next day. When you finish the 2nd story kiss him goodnight and turn off the light and leave the room. He will adjust to the routine.

I'm a strong believer in reading to your kids as often as possible, but it seems like after 4 books they start stalling because they don't actually want to go to sleep.
That's MY experience with 4-year olds, at least.
I agree with making him choose 2 books on his own.
