Meh, I have three kids - 2 boys and girl. They've done all kinds of weird things with their hair, and all a weird haircut does is give ME more leverage for good behavior, lol!
As in - if those grades drop below C-level, your hair goes back to natural color/gets cut/say goodbye to the faux-hawk,lol!
I'd rather they had fun experimenting now than that they go TOO crazy later in life.
Just explain to the kid that if God forbid y'all have to go to a funeral next week, the hair is getting cut.

Choose your battles is my motto. Hair is a small thing. If it becomes a problem with the school they will let him know.

Yeah, let him grow it and find out for himself if it works or not. Kids this age often experiment with their own looks and style, or try to copy others, it's part of discovering who they are. And their tendency is to do the opposite of whatever their parents want them to do anyway. Hair isn't an issue with fighting over, in the grand scheme of things.
