Answered Conundrum Next Conundrum
Your child finds a spider in his room. Spiders freak you out and you have the urge to scream. Should you do so in front of your child?
Should you openly show your fear in front of your child, if you do not want him to be afraid of spiders (as much as you are)? How do you handle the situation if you find yourself unable to get close enough to the spider to remove it?

I see three options. One: Be afraid, and let your child know that everyone has fears. Two: Get around your fears by using the situation as a "learning opportunity" where you have the child remove it for you. Three: Overcome your fears and teach your child to do the same.
Depends on your personal preferences. It's easier to do the first two, but it's most honorable to do the third.

Showing your fears to your child is healthy. They need to realize that we all have things we are scared of. Hiding fears makes them think that something is wrong when they; themselves, have fears. This could lead to a great sense of embarrassment for your child when they have bad dreams, are frightened by a noise, etc. Allowing them to see you express your fears will give them the reassurance that it's also acceptable for them to express theirs.

I know for some people the sight of a spider might be terrifying, but it is best not to scream in front of the child. They might pick up this same fear that you have by seeing this reaction. I would just calmly either find someone else that could take care of it or try and get through the fear and kill it yourself. This will save your child from replicated this same action.
