Conundrum Next Conundrum
As a dog owner if someone drops in unexpected and they mention they don't like dogs what should I do to be fair to my pups and my guest?
My dogs are friendly but the will not over whelm a person they do not know they will simply sit at my feet or on the couch with me. Do you think my guest would expect me to crate them? And Should I?

I would make an effort to keep the dogs off of them if by overwhelm you mean they'll be in your guests lap. However your home is your dogs home. Would you send a child to its room if a guest disliked the child? If your guests dislike your dogs that much they won't come over.

If your dogs are well behaved, and are not bothering the guest, I don't see any reason why you should crate them. If the dogs aren't well behaved then I would crate them, or put them outside or in another room. The guest has to realize that while they don't like dogs, they are visiting the dog's house. If you had invited them over, then I would put the dogs in a crate or separate room to be polite and accommodate them. But I feel that is a different scenario than somebody just dropping in.

If they dropped round unexpectedly I wouldn't confine the dog, I'd confine the guest.
Well not in a crate.. but I'd see and entertain my guest in one room and make sure the dogs didn't come in. It strikes the balance between hospitality and the needs of your dogs.
If you were inviting the person round then you'd have the chance to either make other arangments for your dogs, or to confine them to the garden or other part of your home. But in this case its up to your guest to appreciate that they have to be considerate to your dogs as well.

The idea of putting my guest in a crate made me laugh! I've had some that I would have loved to crate.

Well, if the guest feels comfortable enough to just drop in unexpectedly, then surely they already know that you have dogs. What are they complaining about?
Dogs seem to know who are "dog people" and who aren't, and in my own experience, the only two guests my dogs have ever nipped at are people who had dog phobias because they had been bitten severely as children. Dogs know who is afraid of them, and I can understand the guest's discomfort. In that case, I would put my dogs outside on their tethers or in another room just because I don't want them to hurt anybody.
Now, if the guest just doesn't like the noise or smell, then that's their problem and they should just keep their opinions to themselves and drop in on friends who don't have dogs.
In your situation, if the dogs are behaving themselves, sitting quietly and not jumping on guests, then no, I would not crate them.

I use a plastic baby gate that snaps and put my dogs down a hallway. That way they have use and freedom of the second part of the house and not bother my guests. I put their water and food in the hall so they have complete access to it. Usually my guest will realize my dogs are harmless, and make friends with them over the gate. I let them make the final decision if I can let them roam free or not. Some people are afraid of dogs no matter how big or small they are, or allergic to them. I try and respect my guests and my pets at the same time giving them the ability to look on us and roam a bit without being caged.

While I am not one to humanize my pets, this is still your dogs' home, not your friends' home. If your pups are well-mannered as you say, I would personally not crate them for drop-in guests. I only isolate my dogs for invited company whom I know are not dog fanciers.
