While I must admit some bias on this question, given that I am pet owner, I do think that pet care deductions make sense as a health care deduction. The Center for Disease Control backs up the article's assertion that pets help their owners lead healthier and happier lives. Unfortunately, the cost of pet care acts as a deterrent for many people, especially in this economy. Moreover, the high cost of pet care in this economy has actually led to a higher rate of pet abandonment. Offering a tax credit could be a way to prevent abandonments like these. Offering a tax deduction might also encourage more people to spay or neuter their pets, since the cost of these operations is sometime preventative. To me at least, this seems like a positive move.

i think its insane. if thats the case ill go get 5 pets, and i'll claim my fish to. why not, huh? people made the decision to go purchase a pet and they know it is their responsibility to care for the pet and should have known what they are getting into. and as far as abondonment, if you have any doubt you cant care for one dont get one. common sense people. i don't want be the one paying my neighbors pet care when its his pet.
