Answered Conundrum Next Conundrum
Is it cruel to leave your dogs locked inside a garage kennel all their life because you don't want them in your house?
A couple I know has two dogs who basically stay locked up in a home-made fenced-off area in the garage all day everyday. The couple works long hours and has hardly any time to let the dogs out or take them for walks. The dogs are also not allowed to go inside the house. Is this cruel to the dogs?

I have a few questions for this couple.
1. Why did they take on the responsibility of the dogs if they clearly do not have time to give them proper exercise and socialization?
2. Why did they take on the responsibility of the dogs when they are not willing to properly accomodate them?
3. If they do not have enough time to care for the dogs, why not give them up for adoption to a family who is willing to give them appropriate attention?
Dogs need stimulation, affection and exercise. Dogs can begin to suffer from anxiety if they are left alone for too long or are not given sufficient exercise to release pent up energy (especially if they were once used to being dependent on an owner). Anxiety could lead to excessive barking, self mutilation, aggressiveness, attempts to escape, eliminating in their area and destructive chewing. This type of behavior can become dangerous to other dogs in the kennel.
I had neighbors like this once. They had two Rottweilers and kept them locked outside in a kennel 24 hours a day. The dogs were not allowed inside the house. The dogs became aggressive, destructive and started to break out of their kennel. They broke through our wooden fence in our back yard and attacked my dad while he was outside. They also almost jumped through our screen door on the back of our house. The dogs also attacked a neighbor across the street who was walking his dog. The dogs escaped from their kennel multiple times. The owner was fined and almost had charges pressed against him.
In my opinion, keeping a dog locked up all day everyday is unacceptable and unkind.

I think so yes.
If you don't have the time to care for a dog, or the desire to let them into your life you shouldn't have them. You have to look at it from their perspective, if you asked this same exact question but in regards to a child, would it be cruel?
There's your answer.

The extent of cruelty does depend slightly on the bred of dog. If the dog was a chiwawa for example that requires little to no walking on a lease then while cruel it isnt barbaric. If they had a Siberian husky they left locked in the garage all day then I would definitely consider it cruel. Depending on the bred of dog, especially in the case of breeds such as huskies, they require a significant amount of exercise and stimulation every single day. I would definitely consider talking to the couple if you are worried about the welfare of the dogs. When a person decides to take an animal into his or her home they take responsibility for its well being and have a responsibility to provide a necessary level of care. They could hirer a dog walking service for example which would definitely bring a little more happiness to the dogs lives and maybe fence off the backyard, or hirer a dog sitter with a yard.

I'd say yes. Dogs need exercise no matter how big or small. Running back and forth in a cage, getting no affection except for the possible "hello" on the way in from the car is not enough. Why own a dog if it's just going to be locked in a cage?

Yes it is cruel. If they don't have time for the dogs, they shouldn't keep them. Dogs are social animals. They need love, attention and companionship from their owners and they deserve to be treated as members of the family. They shouldn't be left in the garage all the time. They need warmth and comfort just as much as we do. They need exercise and time to play just like we do. If you couldn't stand to be locked in a garage all day every day, why would you expect your dogs to be able to stand it?

Without a single doubt. Yes.
I would feel awful for your friend if they where ever exposed to the ASPCA in their city or town.
And even more awful for the animals who will probably end up getting euthanized ( *EXECUTED* ) because of abnormal social and chiropractic issues.
(Hip and back problems, ingrown finger nails, and possible heart worm problems)
PN:
If they don't have the facilities and resources to properly care for the animal then they shouldn't be allowed to own them.
Sorry for being so frank but.
How can you even befriend such people.
I would seriously consider a intervention on behalf of these animals.
(And before its to late)
Would you leave your child in a cage or even locked in their room for the rest of their life ?
Agnostic Regards,

Yes it is cruel to the dogs. They need exercise and to see something other than a wall all day. I think it dumbs them down if they are not active and makes little sad zombie pets.
People shouldn't take on having pets if they don't have time for them.

Yes, it's cruel. They should give the dogs to people who have time for them.
A dog that's never allowed to run and play is likely a sad, unhappy animal.
Dogs that don't get interaction with people can also become afraid of new people and that could lead to biting.

You people think Dogs are human. They are animals. Sure they have feelings but we all know that they have no short term memory, so they will forget it immediately. You know, how they don't know that they pee pee on your floor unless you catch them in the act.
I own 5 dogs. 3 stay inside, and 2 are outside dogs. The two outside dogs are big and like cold weather. They don't want to be inside cooped up in your lap. If you think so, you are the one who is being cruel.
If you know anything about dogs, is that they were originally working dogs. Dogs were like horses. They were kept outside in barns.
Remember, if you think your dog likes being dressed up and in your lap, because you have force fed it to them since puppyhood, you are kookoo in the head. get over yourself. dogs can sense the craziness.
