Conundrum Next Conundrum
If you are supposed to spend a specific amount on a Christmas gift, do you spend the whole amount even if you find something on sale?

If I found exactly what they wanted and it was cheaper than I had been told, then I would use the little extra to buy a little extra :) Something cute or silly. I would definitely do this if they had given me the money to buy them a gift :) or it was pooled money from a number of people.
Mind you I'm mostly poor and don't have heaps to spend on presents. If it meant I might be able to buy someone else a present as well for the same amount of money I might do that too. I guess it depends on who I'm buying for and how important the money is at the time ( and if someone gave me the money to buy the present in the first place )

I'm not sure what a situation would be where you're expected to spend a certain amount on a gift. Normally, it's just a maximum amount, like in Secret Santa-type situations, so people aren't going out and buying solid gold Cadillacs when other people are just getting stocking stuffers. Honestly, the idea strikes me as a bit tacky.
So no, if I find something on sale and I'm sure that it's a good gift -- i.e. I'm not just being cheap and getting something half-hearted -- I'd just get that. You take off the price tag, after all. If someone wants to quibble about a gift or like it less just because of how much it cost, that's their problem.
