Well, it depends on how much money I had and what the weather was like and whether it was going to be a hard walk back to the car carrying bags and stuff.

15min isn't that long if you're not dragged down by bags or little kids, but if I had all that in tow I would pay the $5 I guess. Comfort does have a price :) but its not that high.....

Perhaps your friend has less money that you think and is really trying to save or spend less. If someone did that while we were out shopping and didn't want to spend the money I would never insist. I would always think they are saving money or don't have it and I wouldn't want to embarrass them.

I wouldn't mind walking some if the weather was nice. I wouldn't go as far as to walk 15 minutes away. If it was cold I would definitely pay the fee.

I like the idea of walking as it is extremely healthy for you. However, if your friend is a woman (women are targets of many criminals), walking alone, and in a dangerous area of the city, then perhaps he/she should rethink their strategy of owning a car in the city? If budget isn't the reason for being so frugal, then perhaps you should gently tell your friend your concerns. Unless of course your friend was doing the walking with someone, this is a dangerous practice in any major city.

Honestly, this isn't the most ethical answer, but I'm just going to be real. I probably wouldn't want to walk more than 5-10 minutes. If I had to, I'd risk parking illegally or going over time on a parking meter in order to have a quicker walk. As some people have mentioned, it's just safer that way, and in an area where I'd have to pay to park, safety is also a big issue. But then, I'm also a bit lazy.

This is probably why I get a lot of parking tickets.

To avoid $5 I'd probably only walk for a couple of minutes. Maybe three or four. However, much more than that and I simply pay no matter how much it is. Some areas in large cities are valet-only anyway, so saving money isn't really an option. I've tried, and you pay the same price just to valet your car in an emptier lot. Unless you care about parking yourself vs. handing the keys over, it makes no difference.
