After driving across country I have decided that 3 states is my limit. I came through 7 states to get here in 2000 and I will not repeat that trip if I can help it. I have flown back and forth and I find it much more relaxing and it makes the trip much better for me to fly.

I am not a big fan of flying, to say the least. I like the experience of driving and viewing the scenery along the way. I've driven across many states at once on trips in the past, and I enjoy being in control of my own schedule. Also, if my husband and I are traveling together, we can always take turns at the wheel.
As long as I had the time, the reliable vehicle and the reason for the road trip, I'd prefer to drive until the land itself ran out, forcing me to stop just because I can't drive across the ocean. Therefore, I would rather choose the driving, even if it meant going from one coast of the country all the way to the other.
Of course, there are situations in which that's not practical due to lack of time, such as the need to fly in order to get to a funeral very far away, and in that case I give in and do what I need to do in dealing with the airlines. I am glad I have not had to do that for years.

We drove from Southern California to New Orleans on our last vacation (summer of 2007). It was a blast. We slept in our truck at truck stops during the traveling part. We stopped whenever we saw something interesting to check out or a restaurant that sounded good. We brought our dogs along with us.
If we had to go any farther than that, I would want to take Amtrack, not fly. It is much less stressful to take the train. You can walk around on it. It doesn't take three hours just to get on the train. You aren't afraid of highjackers. Trains don't allow dogs, though. Too bad.
Of course, if we ever went overseas again I would probably fly, but only if I didn't have enough time or money to go by cruiseship. A cruise is the most relaxing adventure I have ever been on.
Flying just isn't any fun anymore.

I actually love flying but I don't like the expense. With my arthritis and stuff, it makes riding or even driving in the car for an extended length of time very uncomfortable. However, I drove last year for a five hour drive and with stopping a couple times, I did okay. That is probably the limit of driving-five hours. :-)
