Hi Camilla,
When I lived back home (SF Bay Area), my closest friend moved up to Napa and I had the chance to see all the seasons in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys.
I two best times to go for color and beauty would be Spring or Fall. There's nothing more beautiful than looking at the fresh spring colors popping out over a vineyard, or to watch the entire valley prepare for winter by shedding their colors and leaves.
If I had to pick one, I would pick fall. If you plan soon, you'll have plenty of time!
If your wine tour doesn't include V. Sattui Winery, make sure you take a detour there. They have beautiful grounds and encourage people to have picnics. (You can purchase all the fixings for a great picnic on site, and watch the wine train pass by!)

I think it really depends on your personal preferences. I agree with the first answerer on Fall - Sep/Oct can be very hectic and crowded since it's Harvest time and EVERYONE wants to go at that time. I recommend early November / mid-November as a better time to really enjoy the Fall colors when it'll be less crowded and also the weather is milder at that point.
Early Spring is also really lovely - February is particularly special because the wild mustard is in bloom in between all the vine rows which is unbelievably picturesque. It can be a bit rainy at that time, but it's pretty sporadic by then (December and January are mostly non-stop rain!).
If you're planning a trip to Wine Country, here's a few tips which are good to keep in mind as you set up your schedule:
