If you want to travel exactly on the very desired dates before christmas and directly after new years, I would purchase as soon as possible. Many people are traveling on these days.

If you are more flexible with the dates, you might find good deals even a few days before you travel. But keep in mind, around christmas many people travel home or go on vacation, so if you want to be safe, get your tickets early.

Travel blogger Rick Seaney says the time to buy is in September or October. After that, flights start filling up and fares start going up. This is especially important since airlines are operating fewer flights this holiday season. He also recommends that you try to stay away from the most popular travel dates if you are really looking for a great deal. Avoid flying on December 20 or 23 as well as January 3.

Good luck!

I'm sorry no best answer was selected. I stopped receiving email reminders from Conundrum and didn't get any warning. Went to pick my best answer today, and saw that it automatically picked "no best answer." :(

Though you by it earlier, they will not be cheaper than other dates. Because Travel companies know that people travel most in festivals. So if you want real cheap ticket, book a ticket of +-10 days of X'mas about 2 months before.
