Insurance companies have changed insurance policies so much in the past decade. So much so, that you can't let your friend drive your car, unless you are wealthy enough to not worry about money, should they total your car in an accident. Your insurance wouldn't cover them unless you added them to your policy. Another question is are they even insured to drive any car at all? Even if they are insured, their insurance won't cover them driving another person's car, or even a rental car for full comprehensive coverage. Their insurance will only cover the cost of repairing the OTHER person's car they damage (liability), not the car they are driving. That's why car rental agency places offer insurance, because they KNOW your insurance will not fully cover that $22,000 car you rented, if you wreck it, and your own insurance will only cover with liability coverage.
Here is another scenario, that has happened to friends in the past: Someone lent their car to a good friend, who unfortunately decided to rob every convenient store he passed along his route while driving down to Miami. The police arrested the man who lent the car, until it was proven that he was not driving. The car was found, impounded as evidence (forever lost to the man who lent it), and the convenience stores sued the man for lending the car to his friend to recover some of the costs associated with their loss. Whew...now that sounds far fetched.....but people will do anything in these desperate times. All I am saying is be warned if you do!!!!

I only have one car.. and my VW is my baby. I wouldn't let anyone borrow it to drive more than across town.
#1. I can't afford to lose my only means of transportation living in a state that often has temperatures dipping below -25.
#2. I need my transportation on an everyday basis I can't loan it to someone else for a cross country jaunt.

It depends on the friend who's going to borrow the car. If it's a friend I can trust and can drive safely, then I'd allow him/her to borrow my car. But if he/she's a reckless driver, then I think I won't allow him/her to borrow the car. It depends too on how's my friendship with that person.
Of course I wouldn't trust someone I just met for like a little months. It's hard to trust someone who you really don't know so I think I'll be a bit picky in this type of situation. But since you said 'best friend' then maybe I knew this person for a long time and I trust him/her a lot.
That friend must promise to that whatever happens to the car, he/she will be responsible for it.

I would not allow a friend to drive my car cross country. First, it is a hefty toll on the car itself. Second, in order for a car to be fit and safe to drive cross country one has to make certain pre-trip maintenance and repairs on the vehicle. A car that may function well in the city for day to day use, may not be ready nor safe for cross country highway travel.
Also, as others have mentioned in prior posts, there's the insurance issue. Sadly, with society being more litigious than ever before, this comes into play as well.
If my friend needed to get cross country for a family emergency or a career advancing opportunity I would gladly help to purchase them an airline ticket, but lending my car for that purpose, I don't think so.
