Absolutely not...If it is such a concern to a parent then don't allow the children to watch certain shows until they understand it's a show...or it's a reality show and you can explain it more to them. We watch people do excessive drugs, beat the hell out of people...I don't walk around doing that cause I saw it on TV. My opinion is that if a child can comprehend the difference between real life and shows made for TV then it should be no problem and adults should be able to comprehend the same. It's a person's own choice what they do, kids are more impresionable, take the right steps and it shouldn't be a major deal if someone has a smoke on a tv show. :)

I don't see why they should. I understand why some think they should "kids see them smoke then want to smoke blah blah blah..." I watched teenage mutant ninja turtles as a child and i never tried to go play in the sewer. if we start banning everything from television that offends some people or that children shouldn't do.. we won't have anything left to watch. Push comes to shove if you don't want to see people smoking on t.v.. turn the channel.

I don't believe the government should dictate the content of TV shows. It is up to the parent to decide which shows are appropriate for their child. Each child is different and responses to stimuli differently. Parents, not the government should raise their children,

There shouldn't be a ban on this at all. In my opinion, smoking, even on television, is simply a natural activity for the characters involved in the story, regardless if they are a main character, minor, guest star or even an extra on that episode. I'm aware that some do feel that smoking is a form of "propaganda" which they feel encourages younger people to engage in that activity. Odd reasoning, in my opinion, but fair enough. However, at the same time, if a show takes place in a recurring setting where people would normally smoke and no one smokes throughout the show or a season's worth of shows, that absence of lighting up may itself come across as propaganda, simply in the opposite direction.of trying to encourage non-smoking among today's youth. It would feel like a series equivalent of a "public service announcement".
By the way, I am a non-smoker.

Children that cannot be taught that smoking is bad for them are probably not old enough to be watching primetime television at all. That being said, no, I do not think that smoking should be banned. It is a part of life and some people choose to partake in smoking.
