How unusual do think it is for someone to not own a television?

My wife and I have not had a television for over six months.
Do you consider that odd? Would you consider getting rid of yours? Is their anyone out there like us?

I don't own a television, because with the wide variety of entertainment available online, and the high cost of cable/satellite service, I don't find it necessary. I can watch just about any program I want to online. Some of it is not the best quality picture, but that is offset by the fact that I am not having to pay exorbitant amounts of money for cable to watch it.

If the story line is more important to you than the size or quality of the picture, then with a decent internet connection and computer, there is really no need to have television.

Believe it or not, there are many areas of the country where television service is inaccessible, including much of Appalachia and many rural and remote parts of states like Colorado and Montana, among others. Almost every state in the U.S. has an area that is inaccessible to television signals due to topography or sometimes due to lack of electricity.

There is no electricity in much of the Fiji islands, thus no television, and they do not have the problems with their children that we do.

Sorry, can't give you a source link. It's just something I remember reading awhile back.

I find it not as unusual now because almost everything is available online. The time when you had to have a TV is past. With HD flat screen monitors who needs a TV?

For a long time I did not turn my TV on so really... I am like you...why should I have one?

I went without one for over a year simply because my husband thinks they are mind control devices XD I don't watch that much tv with the exclusion of House other than that it's usually on noggin' or classic music for the munchkin...so no I don't consider that odd, and I would consider getting rid of mine. My computer though? Not likely. I are addicted.

I don't consider it odd at all.

I consider most television shows a waste of time, and would get rid of mine . . . but I want to be able to play my video game systems and watch DVDs.

My Condo comes with basic cable that I have not hooked up. My wife and I canceled cable over 5 years ago and we don't miss it. Most shows worth watching are available on DVD which can be viewed on a PC just as easily as it can on a television.

If one could look far enough in the future I think that people would find that televisions will vanish in favor of entertainment computers.

I don't think it unusual at all....I applaud those who don't need the TV...I know I couldn't do it...I grew up glued to the thing. I think reading the newspapers and books, doing family activities is more important then constantly sittin' in front of the tube. I think it makes life more rich when you read or go out...

I have a television, but I haven't seen it in over 6 months. Well, I'm not at home (been on extended vacation in South Texas), but I don't watch TV. I say that, and people think I'm strange, so I don't think you're strange -- we're the normal ones...LOL

I do HAVE a nice television at home, large screen, expensive, stereo and all that. Every now and then, when I'm not feeling well, I would lay on the couch and fall asleep watching a movie.

I avoid the news. I'm just too sensitive. I'd spend my life in tears if I watched the news.

I do, however, have one television vice, and that's HOUSE. I don't know why I like the show, but I do. But I watch it on Fox on Demand, a week after it comes out.

I prefer to write, or visit with friends, or run my business, or surf the net... television just doesn't do much for me.

Not very unusual. I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't own a television and they are probably smarter for it lime reading and interacting with others. Which reminds me dancing with the stars is about to start gotta go. Hope that answered your question!

I don't think it is all that unusual these days. Personally I own one but only to watch a few shows without commercials. I really hate those and think commercials are what really cheapens the medium. Without them it is more like going to the movies. I don't watch that much anymore. However, as a kid I was glued to it.

Thanks,
George

I think it is pretty unusual, but not necessarily odd - that word has a much more negative connotation. I say more power to you if you don't have a TV. I don't know that I could ever give mine up - it is how my boyfriend and I relax together in the evening and provides a much needed mental break from work, studying, etc. I do, however, restrict TV to the living/family room. I don't have TV in the bedroom, however. I do think that there are a fair number of people who watch little to no television - the mindlessness isn't for everyone!

Having one isn't bad and not having one isn't bad either. The truth of the matter is soon TV is likely to vanish into the tin air. If internet speed increase the world go online, all of us will be moving in that direction. Apart from the fact that it is time consuming, some of the things that show off on our screen are not peasant to the eye. If you are watching TV on your Computer you can minimize and do other profitable things as well. I think soon we shall see computer manufacturers coming up with a system that will incorporate all of these things like game, TV, Home Theater and rest.

5 years ago a colleague at work told me that he didn't own a TV... and we didn't believe him. It was a source of conversation for weeks. In fact it became a sort of office joke to ask what you saw on TV last night just so he could say he didn't have one.

5 years on and I have to say he's in a growing minority. With services such as Hulu , Itunes and youtube its possible to see those "must see" programs, Which in my case is about 3-4 hours of TV per week. The rest of the time I could use for much more creative and interesting stuff. I watch far less TV than I did 6 months ago and I really could conceive of a time when I did get rid of it. And that probably terrifies the TV networks and cable companies because I don't think I'm the only one.
