Are sexy ads degrading to women?

Check out this ad featuring Paris Hilton. It's controversial in Brazil, where it was filmed, because they argue she's being treated like a "sex object."

What do you think? Is it offensive? What about other sexy ads, like the St Pauli Girl series?

And how does something that elevates a woman in a man's eyes be "degrading"? I've never understood that.

If the woman was covered in mud and being walked on then fed dog food, that would be degrading. But even then some women would just call that a fetish and pay to have it done to them.

It certainly depends on the context of the advertisement. If it is demeaning and was sterotyping women as bad drivers and such, then yes it's offensive.

Also I think that ads which create an unrealistic expectation for a woman's sexuality or body can be degrading.

Why can't people use cute little animals to sell things? This is what I'd like to say to some of the advertisers. "There's nothing that makes me wanna by that car more than the paid plastic chic you've placed in the hood" (Sarcasm)

It depends on the advertisement. Some sexy ads are appropriate and funny to watch, while others just annoying and disgusting. But it's the company's rights to make ads that they think can sell their products, and yes, sex sells. I can fully understand if the ads is for men's products or beers, after all I expect these companies to show sexy men to attract women customers too! (but it doesn't happen as often as I hope, sadly). I am annoyed when the sexy ads has nothing to do with the products, such as a Malaysian insurance ad, yes, insurance ads, which used sexy women. That is just cheap and tacky. Fortunately, they don't use that ads anymore.

The thing is, males in their underwear wouldn't be considered degrading.

A gay bar, with male strippers would be considered a chance for them to "express" themselves.

As for beautiful females degrading? The people that argue that are disgusting and fat. Does it really matter if overweight people argue that crap over less repulsive folks? No. Your weight is degrading.

I would like to personally respond to your statements. You think overweight people have no room to talk about how "beautiful women" are degraded? I am almost thrilled that there are shallow people like you out in the world. Women should be able to accept their bodies the way they come. Women are a lot more than what there bodies look like. I have been judged my whole life about how I looked, even though inside I was a wonderful, but all people ever wanted was my body. It's repulsive to see someone only viewed as someone elses pleasure. Overweight women are just as beautiful, and they are probably only overweight because SHALLOW people have been putting them down all their damn lives.

I watched this commercial. I did not find it degrading. She was aware that people were watching her. She pulled the blinds up and put on a show.

It would have been degrading, in my opinion, only if he were using a telescope to spy on her unaware through a hole in the blinds or something.

The St Pauli girl is wearing way more clothes than the girls in this Victoria's Secret "I love my body" commercial that I see on TV every day. What is weird is Victoria's Secret is selling to women. If women felt degraded by this, then Victoria's Secret would go out of business. Instead, Victoria's Secret is thriving.

I think it is very degrading. Men and also women are very big on how a women is supposed to look. If a company really needs a lady to be half naked for their beer to sell, then obviously then need to change a lot more than their ads. This woman is seen as sexy for not only being half naked, but also next to a mans favorite beer. Women are a lot more than their bodies, I know from personal experience, I hate to see women displayed as objects and not assets to our futures.
