Answered Conundrum Next Conundrum
What consequences should the Australian TV show "Hey Hey it's Saturday" face for its blackface routine?
The routine, which parodied Michael Jackson the Jackson 5 with performers in blackface, has provoked wide outrage because of its racially offensive nature. Guest judge Harry Connick, Jr. slammed the performance, giving it a score of 0. Should the show, host Daryl Summers, and/or the performers be punished? If so, how?

They shouldn't face any official consequences. Everyone involved has apologized. The routine was a comedy act that six doctors had performed some 20 years ago with no controversy. I am glad to say that times have changed and to see that this routine has upset people. However, it was an honest mistake. They have said their apologies. I hope the incident is dropped, people have learned their lessons, and we can move on.

I thought the whole incident was handled excellent on the show. I complement the staff, producers, and all involved in regards to how they handled the situation. Times have changed and this turned into another opportunity to tell the world how America feels.
Watch the video for yourself and see how you feel...

I did not see it, but I will write assuming it was tasteless/racist.
I believe in free speech so I don't believe government sensors should step in.
The market will self correct if it was truly offensive. Ex people will stop watching the show, advertisers will shy away, people will be fired. . .

I hope you're not trying to suggest that you Yanks are thinking of trying to punish Aussies for something we did in our own country. That would be ridiculous. There should not be any "punishment" at all. Daryl and the gang made their amends with Harry and that should be the end of it. We are not a state of America, as much as you might want to laud it over us. We do as we like in our own country, as you do in yours. If you saw the skit and you took offence, well it was unintended, sorry, but it's our country and our sense of humour, so don't try to tell us what to say or think, or how to act. If I were in America you could do that, but as I'm in my own country you can't. The national polls showed that 80% of us weren't worried two hoots about the whole thing, while another 10% were undecided, so don't try to put your PC insecurities onto us! It seems to be a genetic trait with Yanks that you want to tell the rest of the world what to do. Well you can't. It's that trait which makes you unpopular throughout the world, and it was the reason for the 9/11 attacks. Even after that you still want to try to laud it over the rest of the world. When will you start looking at yourselves? You lot could do take-offs of us all day long and we couldn't care less; we'd just laugh it off. You lot take yourselves too seriously!

I also agree with your comments. One thing that I'll add is that you have to watch the last 1:20 of the video (starts at 4:41), where Harry Connick, Jr expresses his opinion and the host apologizes. I think they handled that pretty darned well.
As for the performance itself, I also found it offensive. If it had happened in a vacuum, it would be OK; but life is not a vacuum, we DO have history, and the history makes this performance offensive. Even in Australia.
