Answered Conundrum Next Conundrum
Can Las Vegas truly be a destination for a "family" vacation?
I was in Las Vegas recently and wondered how you could take a family there. There were people handing out pornographic trading cards on every corner, and the discarded cards were laying all over. Giant signs advertised simulated sex shows, advertising was on the buses, there were thousands of free adult entertainment newspaper boxes, I don't see how a family with young children could navigate it. Talk about objectification of women! I'm no prude, I wasn't there on a mission trip and I enjoyed the advertised goods more than a little, but how does it work with a family?

My parents took me to Las Vegas when I was a kid because my dad had a meeting there. While I wouldn't say it was the BEST vacation I'd ever gone on, it certainly wasn't horrible. Some tips:
- Stay out of casinos, obviously. Even to walk through if you can help it. I know a lot of the hotels have built-in casinos, but really, it'll just prompt a lot of questions, curiosity, etc.
- When walking on the sidewalks, try to put your kids somewhere away from the flyers. Give them distractions, talk to them, etc. If they ask questions, don't freak out about it, but don't encourage further curiosity either. You can follow it up with a more serious conversation later.
- There's plenty of good (if perhaps overpriced) shopping, dining, etc. around -- stick to that! Maybe movies and the like. Lots of sights to see, too.
- And there are plenty of more family-friendly shows and concerts at night that you can take kids to. Sure, you might want to make sure you're in the hotel fairly early to avoid riff-raff, but nevertheless.

There was a time when you could take the family to Vegas and have a grand ole time. However, they seem to have removed all family friendly activities and brought it back to regular VEGAS.
I remember visiting Vegas once when MGM had a theme park in the back, which is now a luxury condo/time share location.

Las Vegas is still very family friendly. There are lots of activities for kids. I take my kids every year and they have a great time. Here are a few activities for kids.

What a conundrum! I don't think it IS possible for a family friendly visit to Las Vegas, unless your kids stayed ONLY at a relatives house and you all visited someone there. This is just based on everything you said in the above informational. I have never been there, nor have I ever thought it would be a family friendly place to take the kids. LOL

Oh sure... there's ways to keep the kids happy while you're having fun... if you want the hassle.
But the whole point of a place like Vegas is to get *away* from the kids.
If you want to do family time, then for that, there's Disney Land.

Ahh Las Vegas the city of sin. The place that advertised "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas." Yet they also want families to come, I find it a little odd as they must suspect you can't have it both ways. I frankly don't think it is a good place to have a family vacation, unless one has a very "interesting" family.
I wonder if they are trying to change their image, http://www.visitlasvegas.com/vegas/index.jsp "What happens in Vegas . . ." has been replaced with "Only Vegas"
If you want a family style vacation with shows and gambling I might suggest Reno as many people have described it to me as an upscale Vegas.
I would also suggest Foxwoods http://www.foxwoods.com/ or Mohegan Sun http://www.mohegansun.com/gateway/index.html both have nice places to stay, gambling, shows, and fine dining.
. . . I wonder though is it OK to show kids a casino so they can get used to the idea of gambling in a controlled environment, would this make it more or less likely that they would become compulsive gamblers when they grow up? . . . oh I am going to post this question ^_^
Thanks for asking, this was a fun question!

Vegas is not as family friendly as it was during the 90's. You can still have a kid friendly time. My kids enjoy the different pools at the Hotels. The hotels still have attraction that kids enjoy, such as the Pirate show at TI and the dinner show at Excalibure. When we go to Vegas, my wife and I alternate, one of us goes off and gambles while the other spends time with the kids.
