I am Dutch, and I run into Dutch people all over the world. Also, Dutch people are highly recognizable by their appearance, clothes and hair-do. I am sure I am just as recognizable.
However, I still don't like to run into them, I'm on holiday, and on my holiday I try to get away from it all as much as possible. I don't buy Dutch newspapers, I go to remote places like the middle of China, and -even though it is tough- I try to not use Internet.
Running into other country-fellows disturb that holiday-feeling, so I will just ignore them, if possible. Maybe not the nicest thing to do, but it's my holiday, and I won't let my holiday-feeling be disturbed by being remembered at home.
So, maybe a short 'Hi', but that's it. I'll move on, and I am sure they want to move on too.

• Most of the time when I'm traveling for pleasure its because I want to get away from it all back home... so unless I need to talk to people from home i try not to.

I would like to just smile and say just "Hello", to move on with my vacation and letting them to move on with theirs!
But most of my country men, would like to run away from their fellow country men, during vacation! They say "Hello" to other country men but not to their own fellow country men!!!

I've heard over and over again from friends of mine that travel all over the world that there is a temptaion in foreign countries to strike up a conversation with people you happen to find who are from your homeland, but it can be quite annoying, too, when you're the one being approached by strangers from your homeland.
You'd have to judge the situation, I think. If you overhear them talking about something you can help them with, then surely introduce yourself, offer your help and maybe inquire what part of your home country they are from. I've heard crazy stories about people running into people who happen to be from the same area while abroad, only to find out that they have a few friends or acquaintances in common. It can be exhilarating and fun, but still be careful. In the same respect, people have been targeted, as well, based on their accent and obvious place of citizenship.
You really just have to judge the situation, but I wouldn't avoid them unless they were acting suspiciously. Simply go on about your way and not worry about it.

I probably wouldn't go out of my way too much to start a conversation. I might say hi in passing, and then if they noticed my accent they could start a conversation if they felt comfortable. A lot of people feel a little less at ease when traveling, so the last thing I'd want to do is appear over friendly.

It depends, just like being at them I judge whether I want to talk to someone by their actions. (I'm thinking pub scene for some reason) I wouldn't be any more or less likely to strike up conversation with someone who was from Alaska in another country no.

I would say hi and chit chat a bit. It's fun running into others from your area in a different country. You can share stories of why you're there and maybe even make a friend for the future. It never hurts to be friendly...especially when you're far from home. :)

I would at least say oh where are you from? Then usually if they are Southern they will keep talking for quite a while about back home.
And if they are vacationing you might have met someone that can give you some traveling advice.

If you like to mix in people, and if you find people from your country/origin surely you should say Hi. When you are abroad you may feel alone. Such times its delightful to have someone who knows our mother-tongue or from our origin.
