I would and I have. If I didn't have solid plans that I couldn't get out of I'd be obligated to keep my original flight. But when I'm on my time and my arrival time isn't crucial I'm happy to help someone out. Besides, the airlines tend to offer some nice perks for being so considerate.

Yes, I would if I had a full vacation time ahead and it wasn't a quick overnight to visit with my daughter. The problem is no one ever overbooks the flight to Louisville and so it has never been offered. So I wait for one of those free tickets for another time.

Yes, I would give up my seat. Usually when this is the case the airlines gives you a free $400 vouchers that you can use towards any future flight that you book with them. If their next flight doesn't go until the next day, they even put you up at a hotel and give you coupons for breakfast. If you have no set time to be somewhere I'd go for it. When you book that second trip you will be happy that you did.

I would if I wasn't pressed for time, and changing my plans wouldn't badly affect anyone on the other end. I had a man next to me once give up his seat because they had overbooked and a mother and daughter needed to get to the mother's father's funeral. They bumped her daughter, and they were traveling together, because her mother didn't drive. The car was rented in the arrival city in her daughter's name. I would have done it if I could have.
