Ask yourself how much you trust your boss.
Then, either punch yourself out, or stay at work. This is an illegal practice, and is grounds for immediate termination anywhere. So ask yourself why your boss is offering. Likely, it is so there is a reason to fire you at any given time.
In this economy, if you are working a job where you punch a clock, it is likely that your boss is more concerned with worked man hours per week, than about you being able to pay your rent. Management has to cut costs somewhere, and those costs tend to be easier to trim from payroll. And if they can fire an employee for illegal activities, or not following workplace procedures, they can get around paying the unemployment.
Your manager is watching out for themselves. Better that you watch out for yourself.

It could be a trick! Maybe your boss wants to know how honest an employee you are. If you'll let the BOSS cover for you, surely you'd let others. It shows character, or lack thereof. I think the right thing to do is to politely tell him or her that you have never done something like that, and wouldn't consider it. After all, any decent employee wouldn't!

Don't do it!!!! This actually happened to me. I was told I could leave 30 minutes early, but to write down the time I usually leave. I simply smiled at my boss and said, "Oh no, I can't do that..." I never said anything to anyone else about it. That day, I proved my integrity to my boss and gained my boss' trust and respect for eternity.

Wow, and it only cost 30 minutes. That sounds like a good deal! Joking aside, that's a pretty good point.
