Call and explain the situation. Not only could someone at the new job help you find your way there, but they also should be notified about the reason for your lateness. This is much better than explaining it after your arrival.

Demanda gave good solution. This is what I'd do too. On the other hand, it is wiser to learn the route to the new workplace at least a day before to familiarize yourself with the workplace location and environment. Even though you explain, it'll still makes you look bad.

I've been in this situation and thanks to construction and reroutes, I got all turned around. I did just as suggested by demanda above. I called and explained the traffic situation and got directions to their office from where ever I was at that moment. I showed up 10 minutes late and they were extremely nice and understanding! I was actually going to an interview, which made it all the more stressful, but all things considered, it went well.

To tell you the truth, you have quite a bit less to lose at this point then if it was for the job interview. If I were you, I'd just call them right away from my cell phone, explain, and ask them for directions. Little things like this happen all the time with new hires. In fact, the wrong turn you've made may have been the same one that every new person makes!

I would call ahead and let them know you're lost and will be late and see if they can't help give some direction. Although you're late it will make a good impression that you atleast had the thought to call and let them know.

Call them and be honest about being lost. Hopefully they will understand. If not, at least you are thoughtful enough to call. Maybe that will count for something. They may also help you get to where you are going. Investing in a GPS may also be a helpful solution to ensure that it doesn't happen again.
